Our Psychology Team

At Dune Health and Wellbeing offers a range of psychological services provided by different types of psychologists. All our psychologists are registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) and the Psychology Board of Australia, ensuring high education, training, and ethical practice standards.

What is a Provisional Psychologist?

A Psychologist with provisional registration has completed their tertiary qualifications (study, placements & research) and is undertaking a final one or two years of ‘on the job’ supervised practice.

After these years of supervised practice, they can apply for their general Psychologist registration. While registered with AHPRA, they can’t provide Medicare or Private Health Funds rebates. You won’t require a mental health care plan or GP referral. Because of this, we are offering their services at a significantly reduced rate. You essentially benefit from working with the provisional psychologist with the input of at least two senior psychologists and no limit to the number of sessions you can access!

All Provisionally Registered Psychologists are highly qualified, skilled, and knowledgeable in all aspects of their services. Psychologists with provisional registration are doing the same things a fully registered psychologist would be doing in their client work.

Being under supervision means they can discuss their assessments and therapy implementation with a supervisor who is an even more experienced peer in psychology.

When it comes to the mental health and wellbeing of yourself or a loved one, it’s understandable to want the best. In recognition of that and with an understanding of the importance of best practice in therapy, we are uncompromisingly dedicated to ensuring the very highest quality of therapy and support is provided by each and every one of our clinicians for every one of our clients.

Why choose a provisionally registered psychologist?

Rest assured, when you’re booked with any of our staff, we’ll ensure you receive the care you deserve and need.

 What is a Registered Psychologist?

Psychologists with general registration (over 60% of Australia’s psychologists) have at least six years of university training and supervised experience and build on that with ongoing education.

Psychologists with general registration can work in any number of settings and assess, diagnose, and treat a wide range of clients and areas of concern. They use evidence-based psychological approaches customised to suit each individual, setting, issue, or challenge.

Generally, the Board of Psychology requires a person seeking registration as a Psychologist to have completed four years of University study, usually at the Honours level, plus two years of supervised practice.

Psychologists in Australia must then maintain their registration status through regular professional development and supervision (whereby a qualified senior Psychologist works with the Psychologist to assess, discuss, and enhance their clinical work). Working Psychologists are also required to maintain professional indemnity insurance.

What is a Clinical Psychologist?

In addition to being Registered Psychologists, some Psychologists go on to further training after their four-year degree to complete a Masters (or Doctorate) Degree in Clinical Psychology. During their course of additional study, they engage in a further two years of supervised clinical practice, often with relatively complex and high-severity mental health presentations.

Clinical Psychologists are also required to engage in scholarly research during their additional study, which external experts and/or specialists to ensure that the reviewed research is rigorous and evidence-based.

After completing the aforementioned study and supervised practice, Clinical Psychologists must complete another 1 to 2 years of supervised clinical practice as Clinical Psychology Registrars and demonstrate high-level competency across a range of complex and high-severity mental health presentations. Once this process has been completed, they can seek registration as a Clinical Psychologist in Australia.
