Couples Therapy

Couples therapy is not subsidised by Australia's Better Access Scheme and therefore does not attract a Medicare rebate. To support accessibility and affordability DHW charges each partner the standard 80 minute out-of-pocket fee for joint sessions. For instance, to see a Provisional Psychologist or Counsellor couples therapy would cost $137.40 x 2 = $275. For a Mental Health Social Worker the cost would be $144.95 x 2 = $289.90. For a registered Psychologist the cost would be $150 x 2 = $300. For a Clinical Psychologist the cost would be $162.50 x 2 = $325. Because we bill each individual it may be possible for clients to claim their portion of the couples therapy session (e.g., $137.40 / $144.95 / $150 / $162.50 with their private health insurer.

Individual sessions that you may have with the psychologist as part of your overall wellbeing journey are eligible for Medicare rebates with Registered or Clinical psychologists.
